Mika Taanila: Plastic Heart

Futuro House turns 50 this year. In honour of this anniversary, visual artist and film director Mika Taanila was invited to create a new work inside Futuro. The result is Plastic Heart, a sound installation experienced inside Futuro House, composed entirely of sounds related to the manufacture and handling of Futuro’s building material, reinforced plastic. Plastic Heart turns the oval inner space of Futuro into an echo chamber, in which the listeners can immerse themselves in the musical creation story of Futuro.

Designed by Matti Suuronen, Futuro and its utopian modular architecture have for years fascinated artists, designers and audiences all over the world. Mika Taanila, too, has a long history with Futuro. He has, for example, directed a documentary film about it, entitled Futuro – A New Stance for Tomorrow (1998).

The anniversary work is produced by the WeeGee Exhibition Centre / Espoo Event and Cultural Services in co-operation with EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. Production partners include Ekin Muovi, Finnvox and Genelec.
